How to use the Ingredient Search Tool
March 30, 2017

Here are some quick tips on using the Ingredient Search Tool. Please note that the Ingredient Search Tool behaves differently for the different membership levels. You must be a registered user of the site to use the Sample Search.

Sample search
As search loads you see three choices pop up:
Animal type – choose between Dog and Cat.
Category – Choose between Dry, Canned and Treats.
Ingredients – You see a list of ingredients. You can scroll through them, or simply type the ingredient you are looking for. If you are searching for Fennel, type Fenn and a list of the different iterations of Fennel as an ingredient will show. Pick one.

As search loads you will have two choices that pop up:
Animal type – choose between Dog and Cat.
Category – Choose between Dry, Canned and Treats.
You must make a third choice to run a search
Your choices are:

  1. Brand Name – Start typing a brand name and list of similar brands will appear. If you type “Purina,” for example, you will see multiple iterations of Purina. Choose the one you want.
  2. Including these ingredients – You can choose multiple ingredients, but your choice is an “and” not an “or”. If you choose Chicken and Chicken Meal, you get all products that contain both of those ingredients, not a list of products that contain one or the other.
  3. Excluding these ingredients – You can choose multiple ingredients, but your choice is an “and” not an “or”. So if you choose Chicken By-Products and Chicken Meal, you get all products that exclude both of those ingredients, not a list of products that contain one or the other.

After your search runs, you see a list of matching products. Clicking on “your search" lets you see the search criteria and you can modify it from that screen. You can also save your search or export the results into a .csv file. Click on any product and you will get full information on that product – including the brand name. You can then expand the ingredient deck. You can advance to the previous or next product on the list by using the arrows at the sides of this screen. Clicking on the brand will give you the parent company and its information.
