Definitions of terms used

Parent company – the parent company that controls the brand, as listed in’s Top Company database. For example, Nestle is the parent company of Purina.

Brands – The consumer brand name the product is marketed under. Examples include Purina One, for example.

Product – This is the product line or recipe. For example, Purina One has 7 products in canned dog food. “Chicken & Brown Rice Entrée – Tender Cuts in Gravy” and “Chicken & Brown Rice Entree Adult Classic Ground” are two separate products. Each recipe can have multiple package sizes or SKUs. We don’t track SKUs at this time.
